Curriculum Statement

Science provides so many different opportunities for children to develop important life skills such as speaking and listening; observation, predicting, questioning and evaluating skills, and develops a sense of curiosity and excitement about the world around us. Consequently, it is our intention in Science at Monkton to develop in all young people a lifelong curiosity and interest in the sciences. When planning for the science curriculum, we intend for children to have the opportunity, wherever possible, to learn through varied systematic investigations, leading to them being equipped for life to ask and answer scientific questions about the world around them.

Science lessons are delivered weekly to ensure that the children’s retention of knowledge and skills is effectively maintained. As children progress through the year groups, they build on their skills in working scientifically, as well as on their scientific knowledge, as they develop greater independence in planning and carrying out fair and comparative tests to answer a range of scientific questions. Children will have opportunities to consolidate and retain the science knowledge they have learnt previously and reinforce key scientific vocabulary learnt so far, which is recorded and evidenced in individual journals, that follow them through their years at Monkton. Moreover, children at Monkton are provided with a varied, progressive and well-mapped-out science curriculum that enhances their opportunities for progression across the full breadth of the Science National Curriculum for KS2.
